While we were on the way home from church, I saw a van with these words written on the back window with window paint, “One Nation UNDER GOD.”
Many today would like to take the words “under God” out of our pledge of allegiance. They have believed the lie that there is a law of separation of church and state that is designed to keep God and religion (true religion) out of anything political or patriotic. They look to man to save them. Man is not God and cannot help them apart from God.
Psalm 118:8,9 says, “ It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man. It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in princes.”
Many Americans are looking to themselves for salvation. Proverbs 22:29 says, “none can keep alive his own soul.” Because of the tragedy of the oil spill, people have been encouraged to call out, each to his own god, for help from this terrible situation. But God is not acknowledged as the only source of salvation from this and other great maladies that our nation is facing. America has become like Israel as they were described in the book of Hosea, “My people ask counsel at their stocks, and their staff declareth unto them: for the spirit of whoredoms hath caused them to err, and they have gone a whoring from under their God.” (Hosea 4:12)
There is one man who has a great burden to change America. He is an Egyptian-born pastor, “Dr. Michael Youssef, founding pastor of The Church of The Apostles and president of the ministry ‘Leading the Way’ in Atlanta.” Please note: I do not know his doctrinal beliefs or his stands on certain issues and have no plans to join his group. However, if these people really want revival and really want to save America, God is going to change them and correct their doctrinal beliefs and help them to get on a sure footing with other issues as well. Here is his desire for America.
“Mr. Youssef has found 42,450 people so far to join him in daily prayer for the United States since the ‘God Save America’ campaign launched on July 4.
“’The greatest battle of our time is the battle for the biblical truth,’ stated Youssef in an e-mail to The Christian Post on Monday. “Universalism is rampant in evangelical churches and nothing short of a Holy Spirit revival sweeping across the land will save Christ’s Church from total apostasy.’
“The ‘God Save America’ prayer campaign was inspired by a New York businessman named Jeremiah Lanphier from the 19th century who led a series of small prayer meetings in New York City. The gatherings of less than 20 people soon grew to thousands and expanded to other states, noted Youssef. Across the country, stores would close during lunch time so workers could attend local prayer meetings.
“’I want to tell you that ours is not a hopeless, helpless situation,’ wrote Youssef on his blog Friday. ‘Real change in America is still possible as long as there are Christians willing to consecrate themselves to God in prayer for the spiritual state of this nation.’
“’The reason for our country’s decay – our economic turmoil, our social ills, the church’s coldness and apostasy from the Truth … is because we have departed from the one true God,’ Youssef said. ‘He wants to bless our country in His sovereignty and mercy, but we need to repent of our pride and willful independence.
“’We need to start a revival of prayer and thanksgiving and confession to God,’ he added.”
God had only one remedy for Israel when their country was in turmoil. Since the events of the Old Testament were written for our examples and for our learning, let us take heed to God’s word to Israel. Perhaps God will have mercy on our nation as well. “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” (II Chronicles 7:14)
May God be merciful and preserve America. May God bring revival to our land.
