Not only are spiders smart, but they also have a good memory. On two occasions, the spider I chased around with the camera decided to have revenge later. That was what happened with the one pictured here. She was on the ceiling yesterday (I’m assuming it’s a she), just sitting there. The shiny blue face and furry body gave her away as a jumping spider (sorry, can't see the blue here because of the lighting). She was big, big enough to get a nice picture. Well, she wasn’t too pleased about a picture. However, I did manage to get a few shots before she ran away and hid.
Today I was making some protein balls at the kitchen table. I turned around only to find this creature a couple inches from the top of my head. It's the same spider, just a different angle. Also used a flash for this picture.
The picture below shows the same spider; the light of the flash reflecting on her hairs makes her appear very light.
Hmmm! Maybe it would be a good idea to make the protein balls on the other side of the table. There she was, just sitting there on the ceiling watching. I looked away and looked back again. In just those few seconds she had completely disappeared. Where could she have gone? I went up close to see, and there she was dangling down again. She was so disguised, I couldn’t see her until I got up really close, even though the things she was dangling in front of were a different color than she. Try again. This time I turned the camera on and set it before getting there so it wouldn’t make noise and startle her. Nothing doing. Away she sped.
Well, it wasn’t doing any good to sneak up on me, so she decided to hide. But where? On top of the black lid of the snowman candy jar? Nice try but she showed up in a nice silhouette against the white wall. Now where? How about one of the green bars of the baker’s rack? This worked much better. I could barely see her, even though she wasn’t the same color. She hid behind one of the bars for a while. Occasionally she would peek over it. When she saw me looking at her, she would hide behind it again.
Later, I walked by her to the hallway. She turned and faced me there and then stayed that direction. Even though she could be seen from the back, she was protected. She kept her focus on the front where she thought the danger was.
That is one fascinating thing about spiders. They always face the danger. Some of them have pretty colors on their face. They show these colors when they are in a defensive stance (like the one pictured below; sorry, the colors still did not show up because of the lighting). Interestingly when they retreat, such as when they see a camera, they turn their facial colors away. They never quit watching though.
The Bible says that spiders are exceeding wise (Proverbs 30:24&28). They surely are, and that is one thing that makes them so amazing. God created all things and made them good, even the creepy spider.
