Did you ever have one of those days that did not end up quite how you had anticipated? Well, Wednesday was like that.
It started around 7:30 a.m. A friend called to let us know her father had passed away. He was 85, and it was expected; but it is still hard. Please pray for her.
A different friend had planned to come over to go over her book with me. While we were waiting for her, another friend called and wanted to send her daughter up to use our sewing machine to finish a project to enter into the county fair. Below is just a brief account of how the day went. It was busy, but it was fun over all.
One friend had said she wanted to come over. We told her that was fine. The phone rang around 7:30. It was another friend calling to tell us that her dad had passed away. At 8:30, another friend called. Wednesday was the last day to enter anything into the fair, and the kids wanted to come make something for the fair. Her daughter wanted to use the sewing machine. Christin and her brother Micah came up, and I was helping them when somebody knocked on the door. Figured it was my other friend. By then I had forgotten she was coming. She came in to set up her computer. Just before she came, Micah had decided he wanted to sew something too, so we helped him make an apron, using a Wal Mart apron as a pattern. Both of them did a really good job on their sewing projects.
The sewing machine has lots of quirks and decided to use most of them on the kids as they sewed. First the needle broke. We were actually expecting that and had wondered how much longer the needle would last. But the Christin knew how to put a new one in. Then she ran out of bobbin so tried to make one, but the machine twisted thread up into a long, braided-looking string. We just cut it off. I forgot to tell her she had to hold the thread up in the air or that would happen. Yes, the machine does weird things! Then the thread got caught in the tension knob (not unusual), and the machine wouldn’t run. That was unusual because usually the thread just breaks. That was fixed simply by re-threading the machine. We were running out of time for Micah so decided to use bias tape for the straps so that he would not have to turn his straps inside out. I tried to sew along the very edge of the bias tape, but the bias tape went right down into the machine where the bobbin thread is supposed to be. I was trying to get it out but was afraid I would break another needle. Finally gave up and went and got Christy. But Christin got it fixed before Christy could get back there. Christin is very mechanically minded. Finally they got their projects done, and both projects looked really nice.
Our friend showed us her book. She has written a really nice poem book. She has other books ready to proofread as well. She writes very quickly. She said she did the whole poem book (except for the pictures she added later) in about 2 ½ days. They were nice poems too. We told her she could list the book on our store site when we get it up. She said she might try to sell on etsy as well and also might try to sell her book as an ebook through Lulu.com.
After she left it was time to get lunch. Was just trying to put new hot glue on my glasses so they would stay on my nose. (It's a lot cheaper than nose pads and works better too.) Decided to cut my fingernails while the hot glue gun was warming up. Got one fingernail cut when someone knocked on the door. Wondered who it was. Olivia. Yes, forgot she was coming with the milk. By then, another friend had called Christy, so Olivia had to sit and wait for her money while Christy was on the phone. After she left, it was too late to finish cutting my fingernails. Worked more on Mom's hymn book while the potatoes were soaking. Cooked lima beans and cut some potatoes and made some sour cream sauce to go over them. Baked them. When they were almost done, I sprinkled cheese over them. We started with 6 potatoes, but there weren’t very many left when we were done. They were very good.
Ate supper, got changed, cleaned up, went to church. Waited afterward to find a friend to give her a book to proofread. Got home late. Ate snack on the way home but was still hungry so ate more when at home. Climbed into bed.
What a day! But our days have been busy like that for the past 2 to 3 weeks. Each day is different but each day has been filled with lots of interesting events. Thank you, Lord, for being our strength.
